Introduction

This portfolio contains three major parts. Firstly, two fungal decay cases are studied and shared. Mechanical and biological defects brought by fungal colonisation are discussed, as well as structural integrity of infected trees. Abatements are also proposed for different situations. Secondly three tree risk cases of different defects in trees are analysed, with observations and recommended treatments for each case. Lastly two tree defect detection systems, Resistograph & Tomograph, are introduced. Both of them are widely used in Hong Kong arboricultural industry. The limitations of these tools and suggested improvement for further development are also discussed.

On September 2018, Hong Kong was hit by super Typhoon Mangkhut. Hong Kong Observatory issued the highest storm warning possible, a signal T10. After typhoon Mangkhut pummeled Hong Kong, massive properties damages were reported in most areas in Hong Kong. From the time when this website is published, almost 3 months has passed and our city is still recovering from Typhoon Mangkhut. Tree cases mentioned in this portfolio were reviewed after the storm, though it was not part of the plan in the very first beginning. We wish to take this valuable experience to review our currently understanding on trees, from tree biology to management policy.
